The highest mountains of Norway
Jotunheimen
Jotunheimen means ‘the house of the giants’ and is a pristine mountain area in the east of Norway. National park Jotunheimen is about the size of the Province of Friesland and you will find the greatest concentration of mountains higher than 2,000 metres in Northern-Europe. Also the highest mountains of Norway can be found here: the Galdhøppigen (2,469 metres) and the Glittertind (2,464 metres).
This mountain landscape is ideal for spectacular walks along rushing waterfalls, glaciers, rivers and lakes and through green valleys.
A short walk or a trek of several days, it is up to you. One of the best known walks is the Memurubu path, via the narrow Beseggen ridge to the mountain hut Gjendesheim. This route offers an unforgettable view on the mountain lakes Gjendevatnet and Bessvatnet.
But it is not just hikers who love to stay in Jotunheimen. Jotunheimen also attracts many visitors who come to go horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing, rafting and for the glacier trips and caves. During winter, there are ample possibilities to go cross country skiing, skiing and snowboarding.
Amidst all that natural beauty, the Norwegian culture and cuisine are always close. Some farms will sell, for instance, their own ham, cheese, sausages and bread - delicious!
