Buying a vacation home in Norway: Where do you start, and what should you look out for?

Published on: April 2, 2026

Do you dream of a place where silence stretches all the way to the horizon? A wooden home that still smells of fresh pine, with a view that takes your breath away? Buying a vacation home in Norway is a special process. It’s a choice you make with your heart, but it also has to make sense for your head.

At Portula, we understand that sentiment and we know the numbers. We’re happy to walk you through the process, without rushing you.

How does it work? Your guide to the Norwegian outdoors

Building a Norwegian home is a journey we take together, step by step. We operate with transparency and ensure that you have a single point of contact.

  1. The Preparation: Getting Acquainted and a Trial Stay
It all starts with a good conversation at our office in Apeldoorn. We’ll discuss your housing preferences and show you what’s possible. Are you interested? Then we’d love to take you on a discovery tour of Norway. You’ll visit various lots and can even stay in one of our completed homes to experience the peace and space for yourself.
  2. The Design Phase: Your Villa, Tailored to Your Needs
Together with our technical draftsman, you’ll bring your dreams to life. Whether you choose one of our twelve model homes or a completely custom design, you decide how the home feels. Melanie, our sales consultant, will help you choose the materials, from the window frames to the wide exterior panels. Meanwhile, we’ll handle all the formalities, such as the Norwegian D-number and building permits.
  3. The Construction Phase: Traditional Craftsmanship
Once the lot has been prepared for construction with respect for nature, building begins using only the highest-quality Norwegian materials. Halfway through construction, we organize an on-site meeting. Together with the project manager, electrician, and plumber, you’ll finalize the last details, such as the lighting plan and the best spot for the patio.
  4. Handover and After-Sales Support
The highlight is the festive handover. You’ll inspect the property together with our project manager, and often stay for a few days right after to really get to know your new home. We won’t leave you hanging after that either; we offer after-sales support and can connect you with rental partners if you’d like to generate a return on your investment.

What should you look out for when buying a vacation home?

A vacation home in Norway is more than just a building; it’s a place that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. When making your purchase, keep the following points in mind:

  • Construction quality and materials: Norwegian-style homes require skilled craftsmanship. We build using materials from local sawmills that are designed to withstand the climate.
  • The lot and the view: In Norway, location is everything. When preparing a lot for construction, we always consider how we can best preserve the natural landscape and your view.
  • Personal guidance: The Norwegian process has its own rules. Make sure you have a partner who knows the ins and outs of the Norwegian government and speaks the language of local professionals.

“A place that offers peace of mind and a solid return on investment. That’s the promise we at Portula work to fulfill every day.”
