Norway: surprisingly accessible

Are you dreaming of your own holiday property in Norway, but you have doubts about the distance to Norway? Then we have good news for you. The beautiful south of Norway is surprisingly easy to reach and new connections are being established all the time. This makes it easy to travel to a holiday property in Norway, for just a short break or even a long weekend. Let’s list the possibilities for you.

To Norway by car and ferry

The most common way to travel to Norway is by car. Via Germany, you drive to Hirtshals or Frederikshavn in North-Denmark, to enter the ferry, including your car. The ferries sail out every day and this way you will be in Norway in a matter of hours. The trip from Hirtshals to Kristiansand, for instance, only takes two and a quarter hours.

But Hirtshals-Kristiansand is by no means the only connection. Shipping companies Colorline, Stenaline and Fjordline also go to these destinations in Norway:

  • Larvik
  • Langesund
  • Bergen
  • Stavanger

One of the advantages of travelling to Norway by ferry, including your car, is that you can simply drive into Norway, once you are there, having your car with you. From the ferry, you will drive straight to your holiday property, because the roads in Norway are very nice and quiet. The car will also be quite useful for outings and when you go shopping.

Flying to Norway

Also if you prefer to fly to Norway, there is plenty of choice. KLM, for instance, offers quite frequent flights to the south of Norway and for cheap air travel you can turn to Ryanair. There are a number of airports in the vicinity of Oslo: Gardermoen, but also Sandefjord and Rygge are situated in that region. A bit further away, you will find the airport of Kristiansand and, on the west coast of the south of Norway, the towns of Bergen and Stavanger have their own airports. Also they frequently receive flights coming from the Netherlands.

An option that may be less obvious (but could be quite useful) is to fly to Sälen. This is further north and just across the border with Sweden. This will be convenient if you want to visit popular destinations like Trysil and Lillehammer.

For transport from the airport to your holiday property, you can make use of a rental car. This isn’t necessarily expensive if you study the prices for a bit. It will quickly take you to your favourite part of Norway and you will still have a car at your disposal.

So you see, there are plenty of opportunities if you frequently travel to Norway to enjoy your own Norwegian holiday home. Do you have any more questions regarding the reachability of the region that you have in mind for your holiday property? Portula will be happy to assist you.
